India is one of the world’s fastest-growing auto markets. Tesla has made its debut in India with two variants of the Model Y, including the rear-wheel drive RWD and the long-range drive RWD edition. Tesla has launched its first showroom in India on July 15, 2025, in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), which has attracted many entrepreneurs. They are planning to expand the showroom in Delhi and Gurugram soon.
The starting price has started from ?60 lakh for rear wheel and ?68 lakh for long range, while it can cost more, the final on-road price could go even higher due to steep import duties. They are sourcing the vehicles from the Shanghai gigafactory, as no manufacturing plant has been established, even though there had been several discussions, which makes the import charges pretty high.
Tesla is aiming for 4% of car buyers, which can be considered a luxury segment. This group includes high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, and business leaders who would like to invest in brands. This segment is small but quite profitable. Because Tesla is a luxury car, which cannot be quite appealing for mass market buyers or the middle class, who would like their car to be under ?5 - ?15 lakh. So it is competing with brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi.
Beyond the sales, Tesla's coming can stimulate EV infrastructure development, home charging stations, supercharge stations, and advanced digital management tools. Which might push other brands for the EV innovation. And in the future, we can see other models of Tesla, like the Nasdaq Tesla, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model S, Tesla Cybertruck, as well as other variants.
If the buyer owns a BMW 3 series and is looking for a change, and earns up to ?80L +/ year, the main aim is to get the smart sustainable car, cutting-edge tech but seeing rising fuel prices, poor air quality, and a long wait for EV deliveries that creates a concerns but as Tesla car price which meets all the expectations of the buyers with its brand, performance, autopilot and high tech showing the status symbol and meeting there need and luxury.
If we say in short, owning a Tesla car today is owning an iPhone in 2008 - elite, bold, and forward-thinking. It’s more than a luxury ride-it's a reflection of success.
